From all the stories I read from a google search, grapes can cause real problems for dogs...so the title of this blog post is fitting....every little puppy needs a hero. Rosie's hero is Olivia. This afternoon, Dan and I were upstairs while Olivia and Rosie were downstairs. Before you think it, I'll say it ...yes....that was our first mistake...leaving Rosie out of eye-sight. Not to get off the subject, but I calculated the formula and Rosie is officially 2.5 years in human years, so I ask, would you leave your toddler unattended for even a moment?
While Dan and I were talking, I stopped midstream and said, "I wonder if it's such a good idea to leave Rosie by herself...even if she just went potty outside." No sooner did I say that did Olivia start screaming..."Mommy, Daddy, Rosie is eating grapes and I can't get her to stop!" Well, we have told Olivia a few of the foods that are considered toxic to dogs, and she remembered that grapes were one of them.
So we raced downstairs and there was Rosie with an empty grape stem hanging from her mouth. I think she must have ate 12-15 of them. So I called the 24 hr veterinarian clinic who informed me that I would have to call Animal Poisoning and pay $60 for just a phone consultation that would tell me if I should bring the dog to the hospital. What? So I'm supposed to pay $60 for someone to tell if I should go spend another $200 at the animal hospital - that just seemed wrong. Don't get us wrong, we will do what ever it takes for Rosie...but come on, sometimes you just have to be a little self-sufficient and resourceful, so what does that mean in this day and age?
You Google it!
First question: Are grapes harmful to dogs? Answer: Yes, can cause kidney failure (oh crap!)
Second question: How to induce vomiting in a dog? Answer: A wonderful little YouTube video pops up that describes the many wonderful uses of Hydrogen Peroxide.
Luckily we had the magic potion and it had been less than 20 minutes from when she ate the grapes.
So we poured two teaspoons down Rosie's throat....and 5 minutes later the 12 toxic (2 cents each that would have turned into a $200 vet bill) grapes made their appearance (might I add...all of over the freaking place!)
Dan and I high-fived each other and declared Olivia queen for the day! After all, we would have never of known Rosie ate them if it weren't for Olivia yelling us to come quickly! Also, a shout out to Google is in order as well!
